Pigmentation & Dark Spots

Even tone. Even confidence.

Understanding Pigmentation & Dark Spots

Pigmentation disorders occur when melanocytes (the cells responsible for skin color) produce melanin unevenly. This can manifest as dark patches, sun spots, freckles, or widespread discoloration that makes the skin appear uneven. In Indian skin types (Fitzpatrick III to V), pigmentation is particularly common because higher baseline melanin levels make the skin more reactive to triggers.

Melasma is one of the most challenging pigmentation conditions we treat. It appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, typically on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. Unlike sun spots which respond well to laser therapy alone, melasma requires a carefully layered approach because aggressive treatments can paradoxically worsen it by triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Our pigmentation protocol at Leor begins with identifying the type (epidermal, dermal, or mixed) using a Wood's lamp examination. We then design a combination strategy using Q-Switch lasers at calibrated energy levels, medical-grade chemical peels, and homecare with tyrosinase inhibitors. Sun protection is non-negotiable throughout the treatment journey.
