Building a Skincare Routine for Pune's Climate
Why Pune Needs a Different Skincare Approach
Living and practicing in Pune for over a decade has taught me that generic skincare advice from international beauty magazines often does not apply here. Our climate creates unique challenges that most global skincare brands do not account for. Pune sits at an elevation that gives us cooler winters than coastal Mumbai, but our monsoons bring intense humidity that can overwhelm even the best skincare routines.
Monsoon Skincare (June to September)
The monsoon is when I see the most skincare complaints. Humidity levels soar above 80%, which means your skin's natural moisture barrier is constantly saturated. This might sound like a good thing, but excess moisture actually disrupts the skin's acid mantle and creates a breeding ground for fungal acne and bacterial infections.
During monsoon, I recommend switching to gel-based cleansers and lightweight, water-based moisturizers. Heavy creams will feel suffocating and can clog pores. Use a salicylic acid cleanser twice weekly to keep pores clear. And yes, you still need sunscreen. UV radiation penetrates clouds, and reflected light from wet surfaces can actually increase exposure.
Summer Skincare (March to May)
Pune summers are dry and hot, with temperatures regularly crossing 38 degrees. The key concern here is dehydration and sun damage. Your skin loses water faster in dry heat, and UV index levels are at their peak.
Layer a hyaluronic acid serum under your moisturizer for added hydration. Use SPF 50+ without fail, and consider a physical (zinc oxide) sunscreen if chemical sunscreens irritate your skin. Antioxidant serums with vitamin C provide an additional layer of UV defense and help repair daily photodamage.
When Home Care Is Not Enough
Even the best home routine cannot replicate what professional treatments achieve. A monthly Hydra Facial during summer provides deep cleansing and hydration that topical products cannot reach. Our Celebrity Glow Facial before important events delivers an instant radiance boost that no serum can match.
Winter Skincare (November to February)
Pune winters are mild but surprisingly drying. The combination of lower humidity and indoor heating strips moisture from the skin, leading to flakiness, tightness, and sensitivity. This is when I recommend switching to cream-based cleansers, richer moisturizers with ceramides, and adding a facial oil (squalane or rosehip) as the final step in your evening routine.
At Leor
We design treatment schedules around Pune's seasonal changes. Resurfacing treatments like peels work best in winter when UV exposure is lower. Hydrating treatments are essential during summer. Book a consultation and we will create a year-round plan that keeps your skin at its best regardless of the season.
